The 8th Habit: Inspiring others to find their voice

Teach Others
Chapter 6* presents Covey's Leadership Challenge: inspiring others to find their voice. Covey defines leadership as "communicating to people their worth and potential so clearly that they come to see it in themselves."

The difference between leadership and management is also discussed (using several common examples), but summarized as things without freedom to choose need managing and the distinction that people need leadership (their own or managing through other's leadership).

Lack of leadership can be a chronic problem (noticed through some acute pains):
  • IQ - mental: no shared organizational vision or values (or management by "rules")
  • EQ - emotional/social: disempowerment (apathy, boredom, fear, etc.; management by control)
  • PQ - phsical/economic: misalignment (management focused on efficiency)
  • SQ - spritutal: low trust (management by "the boss")
Corrected through:
  • IQ - mental: pathfinding/vision (strategy: jointly determining goals)
  • EQ - emotional/social: empowering/passion (execution: focus talent on results and help as requested)
  • PQ - phsical/economic: aligning/discipline (structure: manage systems to help personal leaders)
  • SQ - spritutal: modeling/conscience (culture: set a good example)
Report Results
This chapter presented me with two challenges: 1) to rate myself as leader and watch how I manage and 2) begin thinking of how to inspire others to recognize their own leadership ability.

I think my physical & spiritual qualities of leadership are strong (by providing structure and a positivie & supportive culture), but would like to work on empowering others to perform more in- and inter-dependently (I need to delegate better as a "manager") and include others more in the planning and goal-setting processes.

Quiz of the Day: Birth month

It's almost that time...

April
Active and dynamic. Decisive and haste but tends to regret. Attractive and affectionate to oneself. Strong mentality. Loves attention. Diplomatic. Consoling, friendly and solves people's problems. Brave and fearless. Adventurous. Loving and caring. Suave and generous. Emotional. Aggressive. Hasty. Good memory. Moving. Motivates oneself and others. Sickness usually of the head and chest. Sexy in a way that only their lover can see.

Take the quiz: "What does your birth month reveal about you?"

What I'm reading: The 7 habits personal workbook

From Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Personal Workbook:
I have started re-reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People during my 8th Habit Challenge and am completing this workbook as I go.

Most recently, I took the 7 Habits Self-Assessment. The bands on the graph corespond to the rating scale per item:
  • 0-3 Very Poor
  • 3-6 Poor
  • 6-9 Fair
  • 9-12 Good
  • 12-15 Very Good
  • 15-18 Outstanding
So, I hope to focus on improving "5. Seeking first to understand, then to be understood", "Emotional bank account", and "P/PC balance" (for me relating to "7. Sharpen the saw").

New addition

We adopted a new cat, Otis! Here is his bio from the Humane Society of Huron Valley:
Otis is a very friendly cat who was found abandoned and brought to the shelter recently. He's loves to be scratched and petted, and tries to make friends with whoever comes by to say hello! He's been neutered and declawed by his previous owner.

Bowling

We officially quit the bowling league :(

We have all been sick and missed the last few weeks, and with my orientation leader training every Wednesday night starting next week and the league's financial obligations, we decided to stop for the season.

We hope to bowl on our own regularly, and I am excited about trying glow bowling again! My ball is supposed to be a glow ball, I'll try to post photos when we go.
